Dust mite mattress protector β€” 100% cotton, zippered

A 100% cotton encasement that seals your mattress on all six sides, keeping dust mite allergens trapped inside rather than in the air around you.

Your mattress is one of the largest dust mite allergen reservoirs in the home.

The tightly woven cotton creates a barrier against the fine particles that carry those allergens (typically 10–40 microns), while staying soft and breathable. A standard protector goes over the top.

Choosing your depth β€” measure first. Measure your mattress from the top surface down to where it rests on the base, then choose your depth above. Most standard mattresses are up to 25cm; pillow-top, memory foam, and deep mattresses often need 35cm. Picking the right depth ensures a proper fit and avoids a return.

What makes a dust mite mattress protector (encasement) effective

A tightly woven 100% cotton fabric with pores measured at around 2.7 microns β€” far smaller than the 10–40 micron particles that carry dust mite allergens β€” sewn into a full encasement and sealed with enclosed binding seams.

  • Dust mite allergen barrier β€” pores well below allergen-particle size, so dust mite waste stays sealed inside the mattress and out of the air you breathe.
  • Breathable natural cotton β€” a woven natural-fibre fabric that breathes, with no polyurethane laminate or plastic feel.
  • OEKO-TEX certified β€” the cotton fabric carries OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification, tested for over 100 substances of concern.
  • Enclosed binding seams β€” the fabric edges are sealed inside a bound seam, so the barrier stays continuous along every join.
  • Velcro-locked zipper β€” a U-shape zipper sealed by a Velcro flap that stops the zip working open and closes the gap.
  • Soft and quiet β€” natural cotton against the bed, with no crinkle.
The pore-size detail (third-party tested)

Dust mite allergens are carried by fecal pellets and body fragments that typically measure 10 to 40 microns. According to test data supplied by the manufacturer, Fifth Ridge Pty Ltd, this fabric (Sample 00022) has pores measured at approximately 2.7 microns at maximum distribution (third-party capillary flow porometry, Galwick fluid) β€” well below that range, which is why the fabric can be used as a particle barrier. The full zippered closure and enclosed binding seams keep the barrier continuous around all six sides. We have not independently conducted this testing; the figures are reproduced in good faith from the manufacturer.

What the research says about mattress encasings

A 2003 randomised controlled trial published in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (Halken et al.) tested mattress and pillow encasings against placebo encasings in children with asthma and dust mite allergy. The trial found that the active encasings produced a significant long-term reduction in dust mite allergen concentrations in mattresses over 12 months.

This is a finding of that independent study, reported here for general information. Individual results vary, and this product is intended to be used alongside other dust mite reduction measures.

Who this dust mite mattress protector (encasement) is for

Commonly chosen by

  • Anyone building a dust mite barrier across mattress, pillow, and quilt
  • People who prefer 100% natural cotton over synthetic fibres

Probably not the right fit if

  • You need waterproof spill protection β€” see our waterproof mattress encasement

How to fit it

Stand the mattress on its side, slide the encasement over the top, zip the three sides closed, then seal the Velcro flap.

Fitting on a slatted or solid base
  1. Strip the mattress completely.
  2. Stand the mattress on its side, leaning against a wall if needed.
  3. Unzip the encasement fully and slide it over the mattress from the top.
  4. Lay the mattress flat on the bed, then close the zipper around the three sides.
  5. Fold the Velcro flap over the zipper end to seal the closure.
  6. Place a standard mattress protector on top to absorb daily wear.
Fitting on an ensemble base or box spring

Remove the base legs or wheels first. Slide the encasement over the base, close the zipper, then make small incisions where each leg/wheel attaches and screw them back in firmly through the encasement fabric β€” this seals the encasement to the base around each leg.

Measuring your depth & our returns policy

Check your depth before you buy. Because this is a sealed hygiene product, measuring first is the best way to make sure you order the right depth the first time.

  • Measure your mattress depth from the top surface to where it rests on the base, and choose 25cm or 35cm to match.
  • For hygiene reasons, encasements that have been opened or removed from their sealed packaging cannot be returned or exchanged for change of mind (including ordering the wrong depth).
  • Unopened items in their original sealed packaging can be returned within our standard returns window β€” see the Returns & Refund Policy for details.

This does not affect your rights under the Australian Consumer Law. If an item is faulty, not as described, or does not do what we’ve described, you’re entitled to a remedy regardless of this hygiene policy.

Dust mite mattress protector (encasement) FAQs

Which depth do I choose β€” 25cm or 35cm?

Measure your mattress depth from the top surface down to where it rests on the base, then select your depth above. For mattresses up to 25cm deep, choose the 25cm option. For deeper mattresses β€” pillow-top, memory foam, or thick spring mattresses β€” choose the 35cm option. Both are the same 100% cotton encasement; only the depth differs. As this is a sealed hygiene product, please measure before ordering β€” opened items can’t be returned for change of mind.

What’s the difference between this and the waterproof mattress encasement?

Both can be used as a barrier against dust mite particles. This cotton version is 100% natural cotton, OEKO-TEX certified, and more breathable, but it is not waterproof. The waterproof version has a TPU lining that blocks liquid spills as well as particles.

Is it waterproof?

No. This is a 100% cotton encasement chosen for its breathability and natural fibre. If you need protection against spills, see our waterproof mattress encasement.

Will it make me hot at night?

Cotton is a natural, breathable fibre, so this encasement is among the more breathable options. It allows air and water vapour through more readily than a laminated waterproof cover.

What does OEKO-TEX certified mean?

OEKO-TEX Standard 100 is an independent textile certification confirming the fabric has been tested for more than 100 substances of concern. It certifies the absence of those substances in the fabric; it is not a certification of suitability for any specific medical condition.

Can I return it if I order the wrong depth?

If the packaging is unopened, yes β€” within our standard returns window (see the Returns & Refund Policy). Once an encasement has been opened or removed from its sealed packaging, we’re unable to accept a change-of-mind return for hygiene reasons, so please measure your mattress depth before ordering. This doesn’t affect your rights under the Australian Consumer Law if an item is faulty or not as described.
